1/18/12 Israel Day #2

Today we went to Caesarea Martime, (not Caesarea Philiphi) Meggido where we went to the top and were able to see the Jezreel Valley, Mount Tebor, Mount Carmel, and Nazareth. Then we went Nazareth, we drove through Cana, went to the Jordan River, and we are staying at a hotel right on the Sea of Galilee. The high light of the day was when Sarah was baptized in the Jordan River!

The first spot we went to was Cesseara Maritime. King Herod built this area. The main thing he built was a large harbor/port, which became the provincial capital for ancient palestine. It was the 3rd largest port during the time. It had a hippodrone (a place for horse races), a theater, a palace for Herod, and a temple.

Below is a picture of the hippodrone.

The theater

A tomb on the side of the road that would be similar to the tomb Jesus was laid in.

A model of what Tel Meggido would've looked like in ancient times.

This is at the bottom of hill, looking towards the top.

At the gates, or main entrance of Meggido.

At the top of Meggido. In the distance is the Jezreel Valley.

At the top of Meggido again, this circular structure is an altar where sacrifices were made to Baal during the time of King Ahab.

Mount Carmel in the distance. This was where Elijah had a contest with the prophets of Baal to see which god was the true God. (1 Kings 18:19-46)

This is over looking the Jezreel Valley looking towards Mount Tebor on the left,  and in the center is Mount Moreh.

A manger similar to the one that Jesus was laid in after he was born.

This is the top of the Basilica of Annunciation in Nazareth, where Mary's house was located.

The sign explaining the history of the church.

The side of the church with Jesus at the top, then on the next level down Gabriel, Mary on the other side, then the next level were the 4 Gospel writers.

This is a picture of Mary's house.
